Keys to Maintaining Overall Health Fitness

How would you define “fitness”?  Perhaps an image of a well-build man, or a woman with an hourglass figure comes to your mind.  While these can, indeed, be models of physical fitness, there are many important aspects to attaining general fitness of health.  In addition to physical wellness, there is emotional, and psychological fitness that, when combined make for a healthy state of wellness or fitness in a person.

What are some ways in which we can improve our wellness, or fitness no matter where we live or how much money we have?  When it comes to physical fitness, we must care for our bodies in the best way possible for our personal circumstances.  If we have the resources at our disposal to visit a medical doctor for regular checkups, this will do much to make sure that we are physically fit.

Getting proper exercise is an important aspect of physical fitness.  We need not be marathon runners or avid sports players to be physically fit.  While it is recommended to engage in aerobic activity three to five days a week, one need not invest in a gym membership in order to do so.  Briskly walking 2 miles five days a week, or 3.5 miles three days a week will do the trick.  Even making simple changes in our daily routine can help.

If you have a rather sedentary job, and are quite busy throughout the day, changes as simple as parking your car further away in the parking lot, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator to your office can contribute to better physical health and fitness.

Not to be ignored is the need for sufficient rest.  Not only does being well rested help your physical wellness, but your emotional and mental wellbeing as well.  A famous proverb says:  “Better is a handful of rest than a double handful of hard work.”  As in many cases, there is a good balance to be achieved between work and rest; both are necessary to maintain physical, mental and emotional fitness.

In addition to exercise, and proper rest, a healthy, balanced diet is also essential for good, well-rounded health.  Daily foods should include fruits, green leafy vegetables, dairy products (or supplements if one is allergic to dairy), whole grains and essential oils.  If your diet is currently lacking in vitamins or minerals, consider the option of buying and taking a daily multi-vitamin.  You may be surprised at how much more energy you have after taking a vitamin supplement.

For emotional wellness, healthy interaction with people is necessary.  Though we may live a very busy life, taking a few minutes to talk with our elderly neighbor, or our workmates is part of maintaining a well-balanced emotional state.  There is happiness found in giving of our time to help others.  So when feeling a bit down, or isolated, see if there is someone you can assist in some small way.  Doing so will not only brighten their day, but yours as well.

Surround yourself with positive friends who will help you in your goals of maintaining healthy mental, emotional, and physical fitness.  Set goals together for improving your overall fitness, and you will have the joy of seeing happy results.

Listen To Your Body

Aging and fitness are two topics that are at odds with one another as equally as they go hand in hand. This duality of nature can make it hard for people to really understand how to keep themselves fit as they age. On the one had it is much harder to keep ourselves fit as we age, but on the other the importance of keeping ourselves goes up immensely as well.

For some it seems like a losing battle that there is no point to even fight. Of course not fighting at all is the worst mistake you could ever make.

As our bodies age they go through a number of changes. From a fitness standpoint there are really two changes that we need to pay close attention to. The first is our slowing metabolism. Our metabolism is the mechanism in our bodies that dictates how easily we will burn calories and fat. The faster our metabolism the easier it is to keep the fat off. The slower it is the harder it gets. Although it is true that our metabolisms do slow a bit as we age it is a relatively easy thing to manage with a good diet and moderate exercise.

Really so long as your diet is good the majority of the week and you exercise a few times throughout the week, your slowing metabolism should not be that big of a problem for. It is only when you pair a slowing metabolism with poor eating habits and a total lack of exercise that it begins to do you damage. Remember fruits, veggies and lean meats are friends if you want to keep your metabolism roaring.

The other are of fitness that we need to be concerned with as we age is that our bodies do not heal themselves as efficiently as they once did. Our recovery times are longer and strenuous workouts can begin to do more harm than good. This part of fitness, the exercise part, is really all about balance and assessing where you are at in your life. At 20 years old you can do extremely strenuous cardiovascular activities and quickly rebound without any worries. Doing that same exercise at 70 could kill you.

At each stage in our lives the type of exercise that we should be doing in order to maintain a good level of fitness will change. In our younger years through to about 40 you can do a fairly intense workout with worrying too much about it. Once you start heading toward your late 40s and into your 50s you should really start to slow it down. The level by which you slow it down should be dictated by how fit your are.

Really you have to be aware of your own body. If you were running 20 miles at 35 years old and maintained that level of fitness until you were 50 then the amount of exercise that you should cut back on is not going to be the same as a person that could only run half a mile in that same time period.

Keep Fit By Keeping Your Weight Down

Many people today are streaming to gyms and health clubs for one reason, they want to become fit. The idea of being fit is an excellent one because it will provide you with a lifetime of being healthy. However, there is one aspect to being fit that often escapes people's notice. If you want to be truly fit then you need to make sure that you are not over weight. Therefore, to be fit a person that is overweight needs to lose those extra pounds, you need to lose weight.

Weight loss is a war that can only be won by winning one battle at a time. People who are overweight obviously are aware that they need to lose those extra pounds and they do try various ways to do it, but it seems that they are just never able to lose that extra weight and more importantly keep it off. Does that mean that there is no hope?

The simple answer to that question is no. The secret to losing weight is that you need to understand that you cannot win the war if you do not win the battles. What that means is that you need to take it one step at a time. The key is that you need to do simpler and smaller baby steps. This is often very successful because you are tackling smaller steps rather than bigger ones.

The reason that most of us do not lose weight is that we want it all now without sacrificing anything. We eat vegetables for two days straight and then follow that up with two days of exercising. We jump on the scale and are horrified to see that we have actually gained a pound. Meanwhile behind the scenes we are still having the odd chocolate bar or bag of chips. This is why most people fail to lose any weight.

The main thing that you need to understand is that you are on a life style change and not a 3 month diet or exercise program. To lose weight permanently we must understand that we need to change many things in our way of living one step at a time. The first step could be something as simple as exercising for 15 minutes each day. With all of the steps you can increase or decrease the amount as you go along.

So let’s say that week one is 15 minutes of exercise. At the beginning of week two you can eliminate bread for all days of the week except two. Of course you will continue your 15 minutes of exercise. At the beginning of week three you can add a day of vegetables and fruit only to the previous two weekly goals. Each week you can add a new small goal or make one of the existing goals a little bit more difficult. In no time you will have lost that weight and will be living in such a way that it will never return.

All About Fitness

Fitness is a lifestyle. That is something that I truly believe in the most literal way possible. A person should not go on a diet, they should eat healthy all the time. A person should not start exercising in order to lose weight, they should exercise everyday in order to be healthy. If you look at the concept of fitness as temporary state.

As in "I am getting fit in order to lose weight" or "I am getting fit in order to impress that girl or guy" then you are missing the point of fitness entirely. So let's put aside any notions of quick and easy dieting, or fad exercise programs, or any other silliness. Instead let's focus on what works and make a lifestyle change that will empower us for the rest of our lives.

It all starts with your mental outlook. When you look at fast food what do you see? Do you know what I see? Calories, fat and a future heart attack. Yes that is being a bit extreme, but what we are trying to do here is rewire the way your brain thinks about different aspects of your life. If you are serious about getting fit and staying that way then the first thing that you have to change is your outlook on fast food.

Fast food it not nutrious in anyway. In fact it is just the opposite. A typical fast food meal is loaded with enough calories to feed you for the entire day. Normally if a person were to eat three fast food meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) they would consume between 5,000 - 9,000 calories depending on their choices. Keep in mind that the average male needs about 2,200 calories throughout the day (assuming that they are somewhat active) and the average female needs around 1,800.

I hope you can see the extreme problem that you would face if you made eating this type of food a normal part of your life. Losing weight and keeping it off is virtually impossible if you are always eating this junk food. Besides it is just too easy to prepare really healthy foods that taste pretty good to waste time with this junk.

For example you could replace that cheeseburger with a nice fish filet. A full tilapia filet is only about 100 calories. A full salmon filet is about 390. A salmon filet has more fat in it, but it is good fat. The fat you get from a cheeseburger and fries is all bad. The trick to making this work is that you really have to internalize the idea that some food is killing you, while other types of food are making you stronger.

Other good sources of healthy protein are eggs, chicken, turkey, and tofu (if you are looking for a vegetarian option).

The point I really want you to embrace here is that the goal of fitness is to enable you to live a healthy life till the day you die, not just to lose a bit of weight.

Are Martial Arts Good For Fitness?

One of the biggest challenges of finding a fitness regimen that will work for you is picking something that you can stick to. Usually, people find it easier to stick to a workout plan if they choose a physical activity that they enjoy. Martial arts can be a good choice, because they are entertaining and help you to learn a practical skill while you improve your physical fitness.

Choosing a Marital Arts School

There are many different kinds of martial arts school, from karate and taekwondo schools that are suitable for the whole family to enjoy, to Brazilian Ju Jitsu schools and boxing schools aimed at adults looking for a more serious form of self defence. Before you commit to a particular school, think about your goals. Are you hopping to simply boost your fitness levels, or do you want to learn a competitive skill. Is self defence one of your goals? What about sport? Your answers will determine the kind of school which is best for you.

Assessing A Schools’ Training

Whether you are looking for a self defence focused school, or a fitness focused school, you should assess the way that the school trains with a critical eye. The key word here is “aliveness”. The best way to improve your skills, and to get fit, is t train with intensity against a resisting opponent. If a school focuses exclusively on compliant drills, where one person stands still while the other person tests a move, you may learn a lot of different moves, in theory, but you won’t get a good workout, and you won’t learn how to do the moves under pressure. Training which is “alive” offers exercise, and helps to train your muscle memory.

How Much Do Martial Arts Cost

Martial arts training should not cost a lot of money, at least not if you train only once a week. If you want to train more often than that, then you can expect to pay a monthly fee, which should be comparable to a gym membership. Considering that you are joining a martial arts class in order to get fit, you can probably get rid of your gym membership and put that money towards your training. If you find it hard to motivate yourself to go to the gym then it makes sense to spend that money more wisely elsewhere.

Taking up a martial art, or any other sport, is a great investment. Not only will you make new friends and learn new skills, you will improve your fitness at the same time. Studying a martial art gives you a goal to work towards in the form of belts, cords, or whatever grading system your new art uses. Having a goal to aim for helps you to stay motivated, and gives you something to focus on when times get tough. If you are lucky enough to have a talent for your new art, you may even be able to compete in it and earn trophies too.
