Go Green At Home

Did you know you can go green at home and make your home more energy efficient with a few simple home improvement projects?  Although these concepts may sound complicated and technical, simple changes can go a long way towards saving energy and getter greener at home.  Here are a few simple ideas to help get you started.

One very effective and relatively inexpensive way to make your home more energy efficient is to make sure your house is well insulated.  You want your attic and walls to have sufficient insulation.  If they don't, add more to help prevent your home from wasting heat and energy.

An inefficient central heat and air system can be a huge energy hog.  There are very efficient systems that are available now that will save a lot of energy.  You will need to spend money upfront, however lower utility bills will help offset these costs.  You may also be eligible for a rebate from your utility company if you install a new heating and air system

Solar panels have become increasingly popular.  Advances in technology and design have made them much more efficient, attractive and cost-effective.  There are many more local contractors available now.  However, if there are not any local companies in your area who sell and install the panels, there are national companies who can help you as well.

Older homes often have very inefficient windows, particularly for the energy conservation standards of today.  If you have older, out-dated windows on your home, you should seriously consider replacing them.  The most energy efficient windows come with triple or double panes of glass.  Energy efficient windows can dramatically cut the cost of your utility bills and are well worth the investment.

Old coats of paint tend to not be very environmentally friendly or green.  You may want to consider re-painting the interior walls of your house with paints that do contain lead or volatile organic compounds. To really go green, you do need to take care in what materials you use for your home.

We all like getting something free.  How about collecting rain water to use at home.  Sure you will need some money to set up the gutter system and container for collecting the water.  However, this system is fairly inexpensive and easy to set up, and the water you collect will be free.  The water you accumulate can be used for watering the lawn, washing your cars, watering your house plants or even to wash the dishes.

Making your home more energy efficient and environmentally friendly really does not have to complicated or expensive.  The simple tips we have outlined here should get you off to a good start towards having a green home.  Many of the small home improvement projects we have suggested here will make a big impact on your utility bill and more than pay for themselves.

So get started today with your first green home improvement project.  Trust me, it feels good making changes to your home that are not only good for the environment, but will save you money on your utility bills as well.
